Enerchant Millpond/Great Dismal Swamp Kayak Paddle May 19-22, 2011 Merchants Millpond is one of North Carolina’s most beautiful state parks. This Southern Swamp Forest ecosystem of large Cypress trees draped with Spanish Moss, creates a spectacular landscape and a home for dozens of neo tropical migrants and wading birds, beavers,
otters, and many other types of wildlife. Travel back in time while exploring Dismal Swamp State Park. Once covering over 2,000 square miles, George Washington purchased Great Dismal in hopes of harvesting the timber and converting the swamp into dry land for farming purposes. These attempts largely failed, and today the Great Dismal offers a fabulous destination for hiking, paddling and history. This trip will base camp at Merchants Millpond State Park where bathhouse facilities are available for use. You will paddle-explore the millpond on Friday, and on Saturday spend the day hiking and paddling at Dismal Swamp State Park. Both destinations offer excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, as well as new interpretive centers for information and enjoyment. Millpond Registration
