7th Grade Topic:  Alcohol
Yesterday, I met with our 7th grade students during core classes and we discussed alcohol. Among the topics we touched on were the following: BAC (blood alcohol content); the dangers of binge drinking; alcohol poisoning; the potential liability imposed on parents if they knowingly allow a party in their home and alcohol is consumed by those who are underage; the penalties that go with the making or possession of fake ids; and NC laws concerning underage drinking and driving. I ended the class by showing part of a video that depicts the types of things ER personnel consider and do when teens are admitted under the influence of alcohol and other substances.

If your 7th grade student has not talked with you about this class, it might be a great time to refer to it and strike up a conversation on the topic.

Wednesday, 5/28 will be my last day on campus before closing. I will be departing early on Thursday morning to fly to San Fran., where I will be attending a two week intensive Permaculture Gardening Design Certification Course.  Thank you to the Parent's Association for making this opportunity possible.

I hate to miss the last days of a great school year.  Everyone enjoy the summer and continue to explore the world around you.  You will always be amazed how much there is to explore and to learn!

Tips for Caring for Your Computer This Summer

Run a Disk Cleanup and a Disk Defragment once a month. Go to Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools. Run these on both the C and D drives.

Delete any programs you've added to your computer but aren't using.  They are cluttering up your computer!

Don't leave your laptop in a hot car--they can overheat and this can cause damage or part failure.

How to get help over the summer if there is a problem with your laptop:

The GDS Help Desk is open in the summer. Call 288-8590 before coming to campus for the exact schedule. Mrs. Murray, our receptionist can tell you when the Help Desk is open.

Your warranty from Lenovo includes 24 hour / 7 day a week technical support. Call 1-800-426-7378 at any time for assistance with your laptop.  The technician will ask for the serial number (found on the bottom of your laptop) and will then provide help.  If necessary, Lenovo can send a pre-paid express box to your location (home or vacation) to repair the laptop.

Have a Great Summer!
The Arts

Piedmont Young Writer's Conference
Twenty-three 6th, 7th, and 8th graders are working diligently to write and illustrate a 10-15 page booklet in which they will bring with them to this year's Piedmont Young Writers' Conference held on the campus of UNC-G.

Students are working on six different teams to create one story per team.  This week they had a full day to work collaboratively to move towards completion of their books.

Stay tuned to read their stories after completion...
